Marugame castle - 25

I took a picture of the "天守 = Ten syu" from the "隅櫓 = Sumi yagura" on the west side of the "本丸 = Hon maru".
"礎石 = So seki" are lined up at the edge of "石垣 = Ishi gaki" and the "礎石 = So seki" in the center of the photo, It is the cornerstone of a tower that connected each "隅櫓 = Sumi yagura" and "天守 = Ten syu", saying the "渡り櫓 = Watari yagura". When restoring, it looks like the "Himeji castle" with a castle tower and a corner tower which was connected, and the whole main was a single structure. Of course "二の丸 = Ni no maru" was similarly connected by the "渡り櫓 = Watari yagura" in Marugame Castle.

It may be difficult to understand ... It is a wooden model of Marugame castle created in the Edo period.

The bottom pictures are the pictures of the German POWs.
There were many musicians, a band was formed around Paul Engel and the concert was held.
They teach musical instruments and football and other games at the girls' school in Marugame city.

Marugame prisoner-of-war camp
At the time of World War I, German soldiers became prisoners of the Japanese army in "Qingdao of China" that was the leasehold of Germany, and since 1914, 324 German POWs have been converted to "Marugame prisoner-of-war camp" It housed.
They lived in this Marugame for about two years, went to the city freely to some extent, interacted with the Marugame citizens, and taught various things such as soccer and music.
After that, it was transferred to "Bandō prisoner-of-war camp" newly established in Tokushima prefecture of the neighboring prefecture.
There was also a certain degree of freedom there, and they interacted with the surrounding residents like the life at Marugame and they taught citizens music, agriculture, food processing etc.
